Dear Friend,

I write to express my support for Iranians in their current efforts to insure that their government respects the human rights of all its citizens, including critics, such as writers and political activists.

We have been shocked at the recent killings of opponents of the government, and at the recent admission that elements within the government were responsible for these murders.

I join those urging the Iranian Government and the international community, including the United Nations, to conduct an extensive and thorough investigation, not only into these murders, but also into any and all infringements on human rights in Iran.

God bless you and all those working to promote respect for human rights in your country.

Yours sincerely,
Desmond M. Tutu
