Subject: An Iranian woman hit for standing as a candidate for Councils

Tahereh Abdi (Mrs Shekoohi), an Iranian woman was hit by her husband
(Ali Shekoohi) in Tasuj (a city in Eastern Azarbaijan). Tahereh and Ali
have three children, one 18 year old daughter and two younger sons. Ali
Shekoohi is a teacher and a well-known personality in Tasuj. Tahereh is
a university graduated (diploma course) and a housewife.

Apparently, Tahereh wished to excercise her right to stand as a
candidate for the Council Elections in Tasuj. Her husband asked her not
to nominate herself and to stay away from the election campaigns because
he is supporting a group of other candidates. Tahereh refused to obey
her husband on this matter and Ali threatened her that he would beat her
up and he would throw her out of the house.
On Sunday 3rd January 1999, Tahereh travelled to Shabostar and filled in
the registration form. When she returned home, Ali kicked her on both
legs and slapped her on both sides of the face and threw her out of the
house.

Tahereh had no choice but to go to her parents' house. She is
determined to continue excercising her social rights as a citizen. Her
story may explain who so few women had registered for the election.

Regards,

Asghar
