To:=09About Iran
=20
Dear About Iran=85 Reader:
=20
About Iran=85 has translated from Farsi the following statement by a large=20
number of well-known Iranian political and human rights activists, writers,=20
professors, artists and poets. This statement appeals to Iranians to protes=
t=20
against the inaction of the Islamic government in identifying and trying=20
those responsible for plotting and carrying out the gruesome assassination o=
f=20
two prominent Iranian opposition members, Mr. Dariush Forouhar and his wife,=20
Mrs. Parvaneh Forouhar Eskandari, at their home in Tehran in November 1998. =20
It also calls for justice in the murder cases of dissident and secular=20
writers that took place about the same time last year. Those writers were:=20
Mr. Mohammad Mokhtari, Mr. Mohammad Jafar Pouyandeh, Mr. Majid Sharif, and=20
Mr. Pirouz Davani. The statement admonishes the government for its inaction=20
which leaves the public with the only choice they have, that of identifying=20
and naming the culprits on their own. =20
=20
It must be underscored that the Islamic Regime has already confirmed the=20
involvement of its own so called "rouge" security forces of the Ministry of=20
Intelligence. However, it is almost taken for granted that the highest=20
authorities, including Mr. Khamenei, the supreme leader of the regime, had=20
knowledge of and were involved in approving the assassination plan. At the=20
very least, the following several facts support such an involvement:
=20
=B7 In April 1997, a Berlin court found Mr. Khamenei and Mr. Ali Akbar=20
Hashemi-Rafsanjani, who are still in charge of the two highest offices in th=
e=20
Islamic Republic, along with then Foreign Minister, Mr. Ali Akbar Valayati,=20
and then Intelligence Minister, Mr. Ali Fallahian, as the main members of th=
e=20
state committee which had approved the killing of the leadership of Iran=92s=20
Kurdistan Democratic Party in a restaurant in Berlin in 1992.
=20
=B7 Last spring, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Mr. Rahmi Yahya=20
Safavi, in a secret meeting in Qom, vowed to "cut the tongues and the necks"=20
of opponents and dissidents. Mr. Safavi takes his orders from Mr. Khamenei,=20
who, as the supreme leader and the leader of the revolution, is also the=20
Commander in Chief. Despite an uproar in society by the press and protests=20
by students, there has not been a refutation of Mr. Safavi=92s pernicious vo=
w=20
by Mr. Khamenei!
=20
=B7 Last summer, Mr. Khamenei warned that those journalists and writers who=20
dare to test the limits of the Islamic Republic would be silenced.=20
=20
If the past and present record of the Islamic Republic is any indication of=20
its future actions, there may never be a substantive, authentic and open=20
investigation of these assassinations. One such a case is that of the=20
plight of Mr. Abbas Amir-Entezam, the longest held political prisoner of the=20
Islamic Republic. After a closed trial more than 19 years ago, he continues=20
to be imprisoned, suffering long years of torture and solitary confinement=20
and witnessing horrific crimes against humanity. He has consistently asked=20
for a fair and open re-trial. His requests have so far been denied!
=20
Just last month, Mr. Mohsen Kadivar, a former revolutionary who has=20
transformed into a reformist theologian, was convicted in a special clergy=20
court and sentenced to 2 years in prison for instigating public opinion=20
against the Islamic regime. He was essentially denied a fair and open trial=
.=20
Currently, the trial of the Chief of the Security Forces and three of his=20
colleagues, on charges of torturing a number of Tehran districts=92 deputy=20
mayors, is taking place behind closed doors. However, this is for the=20
protection of the accused individuals and their commanders, who undoubtedly=20
include high ranking clergy. In this case, the regime does not wish the=20
public to learn of the actions of the accused and, more likely, those who=20
gave them orders, the ruling clergy. =20
=20
This statement, once again, shows that the search for truth and the demand=20
for justice shall continue in Iran. The people of Iran need the support of=20
all international human rights organizations and all freedom loving people o=
f=20
the world in their struggle for democracy and human rights. About Iran call=
s=20
on all international human rights organizations, including UN Commission on=20
Human Rights, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch/Middle East, to=20
heed the call of these Iranian activists and to pressure the Islamic Republi=
c=20
to expose those who planned and committed these horrendous killings of=20
Iranian dissidents in an open and fair manner. =20

Dear Compatriots:
=20
One hundred seventy bitter days have passed since the silencing of two=20
shining stars of freedom and liberty of the Iranian nation. In the meantime=
,=20
the culprits are still free, the wheels of justice are still immobile, and=20
the nation is still waiting [for answers]!
=20
The great cruelty with which this shameful crime was inflected upon [Darius=
h=20
and Parvaneh Forouhar] , two brave and self sacrificing commanders of this=20
ancient country, has severely harmed the hearts and minds of the freedom=20
loving men and women of our culture loving country, and everyone, young and=20
old, expects justice [for them].
=20
Like [the Persian ancient epic figure] Siavosh, whose [innocent] blood [was=20
spilled] and has been steaming all over the large plains of Iran for=20
thousands of years, Dariush and Parvaneh=92s blood was also shed on the tuli=
p=20
fields of the same plains. Every spring, the renewed growth of the [red]=20
tulips, reminds us of their innocent blood which was shed on the soil by=20
vampire type [criminals] in the darkness of a cold Autumn night [in November=20
1998].
=20
The decent Iranian nation has [always] sought justice for the brave [and=20
martyred] children of this divine land and they shall continue to do so. It=20
is our belief that divine hands shall, sooner or later, avenge these victims=20
and expose the demonic criminals in their disgrace to the world.
=20
Although the governing authorities have repeatedly called for exposing thos=
e=20
responsible for this horrendous crime and for implementing justice, their=20
promises have not yet been kept and our great nation is still waiting!
=20
The people of this land who empathize [with this cause] seek justice for th=
e=20
unjust assassination of these two freedom loving, prolific and brave childre=
n=20
of Iran and for other [assassinated] dissidents and literary writers. We,=20
once again, plead for the implementation of justice and the disclosure of =20
the disgraced and sinister criminals who have bereaved and made mournful th=
e=20
Iranian nation. We impatiently await the formation of an open trial for=20
prosecuting and revealing those who plotted, ordered and carried out these=20
horrendous crimes.
=20
We, the signatories of this statement, reiterate that we shall continue wit=
h=20
our efforts and endeavors until we obtain these just demands. In the event=20
that the Islamic Republic=92s judiciary and enforcement offices [further]=20
postpone the implementation of justice, the people of Iran will be rightful=20
in undertaking their entire resources and capabilities to expose the=20
commanders and implementers of these savage assassinations. =20
