Iran says holds student for inciting riots

TEHRAN, July 18 (Reuters) - Iran's secret police said on Sunday it had
detained a student activist for fomenting recent unrest in the country at
the
behest of exiled dissidents and foreign powers, including the United States.

In a statement read on state media, the Intelligence Ministry said
Manouchehr
Mohammadi had helped incite the unrest that shook Iran this month, after
travelling to the United States and Turkey for meetings with
``counter-revolutionaries and so-called Western human rights groups.''

``He was trying to ride the wave of student protest...and to promote the
line
of violence and clashes,'' the ministry said in its third communique on the
pro-democracy protests and subsequent street riots.

``The counter-revolution ordered him...to mobilise the youth along the line
of royalist ideas,'' the communique said. It was referring to groups which
seek a return of the monarchy deposed by the 1979 Islamic revolution.

It said Mohammadi, an outspoken student dissident often interviewed on
Persian-language broadcasts of Western radios, had travelled to the United
States together with a colleague, Golamreza Mohajerinejad. It did not say
whether Mohajerinejad had also been detained.

Earlier, the ministry announced that some of those arrested during the
unrest
had ties to exiled opposition groups.

``It has been established that some of those arrested, with a major role in
the riots and (orchestrating) delusional slogans, have links with
anti-revolutionary elements outside the country,'' it said in a communique.

Iranian students say security forces arrested more than 1,400 people during
the worst disturbances in the country since the 1979 revolution.

``(We) call for the immediate release of students and civilians arrested
without cause...by military and paramilitary forces over the past few
days,''
Sobh-e Emrouz daily quoted a statement from the Elected Council of Student
Protesters as saying.

The unrest was triggered by a crackdown against a peaceful protest by
pro-democracy students against the suspension of a leading moderate
newspaper
by a conservative-run court.

The students said they would not call further protests until their leaders
met members of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran's highest
security
body, to discuss their demands.

``The council will postpone decisions about protest marches or sit-ins until
negotiations have ended... Students and citizens are requested not to take
part in any rally until further notice,'' their statement said.

The students have called for the resignation of the national police chief,
whom they hold responsible for an attack on student dormitories which they
say resulted in seven student deaths and more than 200 injured. The
government has confirmed only one death.
