SMCCDI: The Islamic Republic Shall Stop Illegal Arrests; Kidnappings and
Forced Confessions.

Press Release

Once again, the security forces of the Islamic Republic, under direct
orders from The Interior Ministry, have kidnapped, from her home, another
innocent citizen of Iran.

On the night of Monday August 23rd, 1999, the Interior Ministry forces,
attacked the house of Mr. Saeed Bashirtash, a well known Human Rights
activist with the intention to unlawfully arrest him.

Since at the time of the incursion Mr. Bashirtash was not home, The
Interior Ministry forces made a brutal search of his house, assaulted and
injured Mr. Bashirtash's father and Kidnap his wife Ms. Darya Bashirtash.
The message left behind for Mr. Bashirtash was simple and clear. "If you
want your wife, present yourself at the Interior Ministry."

In addition, a massive man haunt for students and human rights activists
is being conducted throughout Iran. The homes and families of Mohsen
Pezeshkpour and Arash Pezeshkpour have been looted by the security forces.

The world shall note that while Mr. Khatami, The President of The Islamic
Republic, is on an intensive international campaign to white-wash the
previous political murders and blind assaults on the students, the Islamic
government is busy on a campaign of terror and repression inside Iran.

As of today, there are still more than 150 students detained in the
prisons of the Islamic regime who were arrested in July. That is in
addition to the thousands of other students and human rights activist
detained by the Islamic regime. Most of the high-ranking security
officials, such as General Lotfian, who were directly responsible for the
murders of the students in their dormitory in July have remained in their
positions of authority.

In addition, Mr. Khatami has nominated Mr. Gillani, the infamous Evin
prison prosecutor to the position of the chief judge. Mr. Gillani has
been responsible for the execution of several thousand political
prisoners, including his own two sons during the 1980s. As such, the
return of Mr. Gillani may well be a prelude to another massive campaign of
killings, torture, and forced confessions.

The Iranian public has witnessed the broadcast of these coerced
confessions on the national television. The coerced confessions have
included, among other student heroes, Mr. Mohammadi, Ms. Shansi, Mr.
Mohajerinejad, Mr. Abdolbaghi, and scores of other human rights activist.

We request the immediate and unconditional release of all the students and
human rights activists who are detained by the Islamic Regime including
Ms. Darya Bashirtash, Ms. Maryam Shansi, Mr. Mohamadi, and Mr.

we hold the officials of the Islamic regime, particularly the President
Mohammad Khatami responsible for these pernicious methods and remind him
that the safety and liberty of the Iranian citizens are among his duties.

Furthermore, we urgently request that all Iranian political groups and
human rights associations to create a united front for the unconditional
release of all the political prisoners in Iran and the establishment of a
democratic regime.

We also request from all international organizations and world leaders to
protest these morally reprehensible methods of torture, forced
confessions, and repression, which are committed by the Islamic regime on
a daily basis. They shall pressure the Islamic Regime for the release of
all Prisoners of Opinion in Iran and the Respect of Human Rights by
knowing that the People of Iran will remember all those who supported them
in these grave times.

The Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy in Iran.
