Sorry, I think that I misunderstood the news. The LEF may have decided to
hand one of Shah Bakhsh family back to the the kidnappers in exchange to the
hostages.

Subject: Petition against MKO to be called the voice of Iranian Americans

Petition of Iranian Americans and Other Concerned Citizens to the United
States Congressmen and Congresswomen and the US President regarding Their
Dissociation from the Terrorist Group known as MKO (Modjahedin Khalgh
Organization)

http://www.angelfire.com/ia/IranianAmerican/

The following petition has been drafted by a group of Iranian Americans and
concerned US citizens who do not wish that some US congressmen call MKO
and/or NCR as "the voice of one million Iranian Americans".

Petition
September 1999

United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

President of the United States
White House
Washington, DC 20220

Dear Members of Congress and Senate,
Dear President Clinton,

We are writing to you today as a group of concerned citizens, Iranian
Americans and Iranian nationals throughout the world to protest against a
series of Congressional letters and activities supporting the Iranian
Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO)[1]. For many years this group has been
lobbying the U.S. Congress as the presumed representative of the aspirations
of the Iranian people, claiming to be the "sole legitimate, popular, and
democratic alternative" [2] to the current Iranian government despite their
involvement in terrorist attacks against Iran and Iranians and their
treasonous confederation with Saddam Hussein during and following the
Iraq-Iran War. Along with this, and because of their historically
anti-American platform, role in the seizure of the U.S. embassy and murders
of American citizens, the U.S. State Department placed them on the list of
terrorist groups under the 1996 Antiterrorism Act [3].

Nonetheless, several of your colleagues have seen fit to circulate letters
around Congress urging support of the MKO. On 01 July 1999 Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced that she had collected the signatures of 130
House members on a letter backing the MKO. In May of 1998, she, Gary
Ackerman, Bob Menendez, Edolphus Towns and James Traficant held a briefing
with the MKO. At that time it was announced that "220 members of Congress"
supported the MKO. Immediately following both these events, the MKO launched
bomb attacks inside Iran, leading to the deaths of innocent people. The 03
June 1998 bombings claimed the lives of several civilians and brought
condemnation from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and others [4].
The past two years have also seen an increase in the numbers of
assassinations and other attacks by MKO forces. It is patently clear that
these letters and activities have served to embolden the MKO and have
encouraged them to become more violent and ruthless.

We, the undersigned, urge you to recognize that:
1. The MKO is a violent political organization which does not respect the
basic principles of human rights.
2. The MKO cannot plausibly claim to represent all, or even a majority of
the citizens of Iran or persons of Iranian heritage in the United States or
elsewhere.
3. The MKO's use of political violence and terror is a gross violation of
human rights, counterproductive to peace and destructive to democracy.
4. The Congressional letters and activities supportive of the MKO have
mirrored a disturbing rise in MKO violence.
5. The Congressional letters supportive of the MKO serve to further alienate
the American and Iranian peoples.
6. We believe that, by far, the vast majority of the one million Iranian
Americans [5] do not appreciate having members of the US Congress or Senate
describe the MKO, NCR or any other unelected group as the voice of Iranian
Americans or other Iranians.

Sincerely,
