Iran : Ayatollah Jannati says Guardian Council not answerable to general
public

Text of report by Iranian newspaper `Jomhuri-ye Eslami' web site on 18th
October

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, Secretary of the Guardian Council, yesterday
replied to a series of questions put to him by the students of Sharif
Industrial University about the manner in which the qualifications and
credentials of candidates for the Assembly of Experts were being
evaluated by the Guardian Council.

Inviting people from all walks of life to participate in the elections,
Ayatollah Jannati said that a massive turnout by the electorate on
polling day would symbolize the strength of the system, while a low
turnout would only benefit the enemies of Islam and the political system
in Iran .

Ayatollah Jannati pointed out: "The greater the number of people who
turn out to vote in the elections, the greater the dismay and despair of
the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran ."

Referring to candidates whose credentials and eligibility have not been
approved by the Guardian Council, Ayatollah Jannati said: "The Guardian
Council is not prepared to inform the general public about the reasons
for rejecting the qualifications of certain candidates, even if the
candidates themselves request that the reasons be disclosed and made
public."

Ayatollah Jannati said: "It is quite possible that mistakes may have
been made in some instances, but such mistakes are not what they have
been made out to be by some elements in society and they should not be
exaggerated."

When asked to whom the Guardian Council would answer if it ever made a
mistake, Ayatollah Jannati replied: "We are only responsible to the
authority that appointed and installed us."
